See the sauna, tub and salt roomDoina was born in Șugău, in historic Maramureș. She lives here, feels here, works here. Twenty years ago she and her family took up the craft of hospitality. The official register calls it the hospitality industry; her own name for it is the craft of welcome — the kind where you are your guest’s host and their friend at once.
That is how Pensiunea Doina came to be, and it is more than a set of buildings: five hectares of land where you can find the quiet and the peace of mind you spend the year longing for. As you come in there is water on your left and, on your right, the hill and the grui. A place where you taste what is particular to Maramureș — whether you come at Christmas or at Easter, for the haymaking or for the fruit harvest that ends up as plum brandy. Whichever day you choose, Maramureș is never quite the same thing twice — and every time you leave wanting to write it a letter, along the valley and up the hill.

The guesthouse has seven double rooms, plus two rooms suited to larger parties: the Attic Nest, sleeping 6, and the Orchard Room, sleeping 4. Altogether we can host 24 adults in comfort, and extra beds can be added for children up to the age of 10. To see each room in turn, have a look at the Accommodation page.

Yes, both free: parking in the guesthouse grounds and wireless internet in all the rooms. Every room also has a television.
At Pensiunea Doina you always have a Finnish sauna in a wooden cabin in the orchard, a hot tub warmed over a wood fire in the open air, and a salt room with salt-brick walls. All of them are in the guesthouse grounds, a short walk from the rooms.
Yes. Doina, the host, cooks traditional Maramureș food herself — on the wood stove and in the cauldron — from the garden and the pantry of the household.
Yes. The two houses, the 28-seat indoor dining hall, the gazebo, the barbecue and the five hectares can all be booked together. Smaller gatherings are held in the dining hall and in the grounds. For weddings, birthdays, family parties or corporate team building with a larger guest list, a marquee can be put up in the garden, which lets us host events of up to around 110 people. On request we can also arrange the things that round out the day — traditional fiddlers and dancers, pottery demonstrations or other local crafts, a campfire, tastings of local produce, meals laid out in the meadow, cart rides, or whatever else suits the season and the occasion.
The guesthouse is a short drive from Sighetu Marmației, which puts you in the heart of historic Maramureș, close to some of the best known cultural and natural landmarks in the region: water mills still in working order, the Merry Cemetery at Săpânța, Bârsana Monastery and the much-loved wooden churches, the Sighet Memorial to the Victims of Communism, the Mocănița steam train on the Vaser Valley, the baths at Ocna Șugatag, mountain lakes, and many other places worth finding — both down in the valley and up on the hill.
